Moodle vs Ultra LMS

Moodle is a deep, open-source academic LMS: a quiz engine with question banks, assignments with rubrics, a gradebook, SCORM 1.2 support and a large plugin ecosystem, for institutions that want full control of hosting and code. Ultra LMS is a Moodle alternative for schools and training providers that would rather not maintain a server: the team sets up your academy, and AI course building, an AI Tutor and AI-drafted grading sit alongside your website, CRM and payments.

At a glance

Moodle is a good fit for

  • Schools and universities needing a full academic LMS with gradebook and detailed roles
  • Institutions with in-house IT or a Moodle Partner that want control of hosting and code
  • Teams that rely on SCORM 1.2, LTI, Common Cartridge and a large plugin ecosystem

Ultra LMS is a good fit for

  • Training providers that want a branded academy set up for them, not a server to run
  • Teams that want AI course building, an AI Tutor and AI-drafted grading built in
  • Academies selling courses through their own Stripe or Razorpay account

Fair is fair

Where Moodle shines

Moodle is an open-source LMS that schools, universities and organisations self-host or run through MoodleCloud or a Moodle Partner.

In the table, Moodle is ahead of Ultra LMS on SCORM / xAPI, gamification, live classes & webinars, community & discussions, multi-language, native mobile app and team seats (B2B).

  • Open-source and self-hostable, so institutions keep full control of code, data residency and hosting choices
  • Deep assessment toolkit in core: quiz engine with question bank, assignments with rubrics and marking workflows, and a gradebook
  • Large plugin ecosystem and standards support, including SCORM 1.2, LTI, IMS Common Cartridge and H5P with xAPI
  • Pluggable AI: admins choose providers such as OpenAI, Azure AI, Ollama or Gemini, and teachers switch AI tools per course
  • Official mobile app with offline access, BigBlueButton classrooms in core, and Workplace multi-tenancy for multi-client training

Decide

Who should choose which

Choose Moodle if…

  • you need a full academic gradebook, question banks and detailed roles and permissions
  • you have in-house IT or a Moodle Partner and want control of hosting, data and code
  • you depend on SCORM 1.2, LTI or IMS Common Cartridge content
  • learners need an official mobile app with offline access

Choose Ultra LMS if…

  • you'd rather have your academy set up for you than run upgrades, backups and plugins
  • you want AI course building, an AI Tutor with citations and AI-drafted grading with teacher approval built in
  • you sell courses and want a website, CRM, email automations and coupons without add-ons
  • you want watermarked videos and documents, device limits, and Stripe or Razorpay with UPI

Moving over

Switching from Moodle

What you can take with you, and how Ultra LMS helps you settle in.

Getting your data out of Moodle

  • Courses export as .mbz backup files with activities, settings and optional user data, but these restore only into another Moodle site.
  • IMS Common Cartridge 1.1 export covers forums, pages, URLs, LTI tools and, partly, quizzes; it's unavailable when asynchronous backup is on.
  • Users, enrolments and grades export as CSV through admin tools, reports and the gradebook.
  • Video and file content can be downloaded from the course file areas.
  • Plan to rebuild quizzes and assignments, and to map certificates, badges and payment enrolments by hand.

Settling into Ultra LMS

  • Import learners from a CSV, enrol them in bulk, and keep their details in the built-in CRM.
  • Rebuild courses quickly: upload your existing documents as references and the AI course builder drafts an outline and lessons for you to edit.
  • Onboarding is hands-on — our team sets up your academy, domain and payments with you.
  • Your data stays portable: export the whole academy, CSVs, and any course as a ZIP or Word document.

Questions

Moodle vs Ultra LMS: FAQ

Common questions about Moodle, and about moving to Ultra LMS.

Does Moodle have AI features?

Yes. Since 4.5, an AI subsystem connects to providers such as OpenAI, Azure AI, Ollama, Gemini and AWS Bedrock, adding text and image generation in the editor and summarise or explain on course pages. AI grading and course generation need third-party plugins.

Does Moodle support SCORM?

Moodle's SCORM activity fully supports SCORM 1.2. Moodle says SCORM 2004 is not supported in core, though the Moodle app can play some SCORM 2004 packages online.

Can I install plugins on MoodleCloud?

No. MoodleCloud sites come with a curated set of plugins, such as Attendance, Custom Certificate and BigBlueButton, and admins can't add their own. Self-hosted or partner-hosted Moodle allows any plugin.

Can Moodle accept payments with Stripe or Razorpay?

Core Moodle includes PayPal through 'Enrolment on payment'. Stripe and Razorpay are available as third-party payment-gateway plugins, and the Razorpay plugin supports INR only.

Does Moodle have a mobile app?

Yes. The official Moodle app for iOS and Android works offline. A Branded Moodle App under your own name is a separate service from Moodle.

Can I limit how many devices a Moodle user logs in from?

Moodle's 'Limit concurrent logins' setting caps simultaneous sessions, but it doesn't work with SSO plugins and doesn't register specific devices.

How is Ultra LMS different from Moodle?

Ultra LMS leads on AI across the whole teaching loop, a built-in CRM and email automations. Moodle is ahead on SCORM / xAPI, gamification and live classes & webinars, so weigh those if they matter to you.

Can I move my academy from Moodle to Ultra LMS?

Yes. Bring your learner list as a CSV (the switching notes above cover what Moodle lets you export) and import it into Ultra LMS, then rebuild your courses — the AI course builder can draft from your existing documents. Onboarding is hands-on: our team sets up your academy with you.

Who can use Ultra LMS?

Ultra LMS is invitation-only. Tell us what you teach through “Request an invitation”; if it's a fit, our team opens your academy and helps you set it up.
